What To Wear To Weddings: Do’s & Don’ts

So wedding season is upon us and in full swing! If you’re also thinking of tying the knot soon with your other half, you’re probably already looking for your wedding rings, such as those hammered tungsten wedding rings for sale, for instance. I have so many friends that are currently engaged it’s not even funny. So of course, for all of us that have a lot of weddings to attend this season, we often ask ourselves…What Am I Going To Wear? Sure most of us have something to wear but today I’m here to give you some suggestions on what to wear/not to wear depending on what type of wedding it is. Here we go!

I Do’s:

  • Wear pieces that are subtle (no this doesn’t mean be boring-because I love patterns).Try to keep it simple but stylish.
  • Don’t over do your make-up. (Now this may be a little hard for me to try to do because I love makeup but I try not to look like I caked my make up on). Romantic looks are great for weddings.

The Don’ts:

  • Do Not Wear White! One of the biggest Don’ts of attending a wedding! White is reserved for the bride, so its rude to wear (unless she specifically instructs you to wear white to the wedding).
  • Try To Avoid Wearing Black. I know that I don’t necessarily follow this “don’t”. It is suggested that wearing black to a wedding reminds people of mourning/death. I don’t think this one is one I will follow at times.
  • No Sexy Revealing Clothes. When I see someone that attends a wedding looking half naked, I want to go up to them and be like this is a wedding, not a strip club. Showing some skin is okay but when you have your belly out, etc….thats just not cute.

Now for some idea’s on what to wear (now I know everyone’s style will be a little different from mine).

dress1

I love this dress because its has the perfect about of dressy without being overly dressy. It is also very comfortable and light weight (which if you attend a wedding in the south, light weight is key-of course as long as it’s not see through).

dress3

I love this dress because it’s classy and elegant. It can be dressed up with the right amount of accessories. This would be worn to a more formal wedding event (black tie/cocktail attire required).

dress4

This dress is perfect for those weddings where it’s not cold during the night but not hot. It’s simple but can be dressed up in many different ways.

dress5

This dress can be dressed up or down. Wearing sandals to a wedding isn’t something I would do, or see much of, but if you have a more casual wedding cute sandals are great to finish the look with.

dress6

As you know floral print is HUGE for the season! When I came across this dress, it reminded me of summer. Great for a casual wedding (though the shoes I would replace with these flower girl shoes to match the outfit).

dress7

This is also perfect for a casual wedding. I love the pairing of the wedges with it!

For me, during the summer time, wearing a maxi dress is one of the most comfortable things to wear. I have seen a lot more women wearing maxi dresses to weddings. Pair it with some cute wedges and some jewelry and you are good to go!

Now I know that every does like want to wear a dress to a wedding and that’s perfectly okay! So here are a few suggestions for the non dress wearers.

Great blog!! Really enjoying reading it! I love all your posts! Really informative and great reads. I would love to see more beauty/product reviews. more personal posts would be nice as well. My other suggestion is to make sure on all the posts the pictures and writing are aligned correctly. Also, some grammatical mistakes are made on previous posts, so spell checking is a plus. -jamie

  2. Agreed on all of these points, except the black dress one! I actually wore a black dress to my dad’s wedding this past summer. It was mostly because I had nothing else to wear, but also because black is always classy and slimming. I had also taken into consideration that it was a very small wedding and wasn’t his first. Content matters a lot. Love how you gave examples of great dresses! Love them all!

Summer I completely agree that sometimes not wearing black to a wedding is hard! I have done it before. Because I also had nothing else to wear or because I wanted to looking slimmer. I agree that content matters a lot when it comes to weddings. 🙂

Thank you!! I am so not a fashionista and I never know what to wear for any occasion, especially weddings. LOL 🙂 I love the looks that you put together in this post.

Rebecca you are very welcome! I am far from a fashionista myself but I do attend several wedding a year (most of the time), so i have learned what to wear. I am glad you love the looks I put together. I love wearing a lot of fun patterns and colors. 🙂

  5. Good points! I especially love that teal lace dress — I have a similar one, and it’s my wedding go-to. I’m with you on the no-black rule — I think it’s acceptable to wear black, but honestly, I’d usually rather wear a fun color and pattern!

Thank You Brittany! I agree I love wearing something that is bright or had a fun pattern to weddings. It is rare that I wear black to a wedding.

I love the Emerald green lace dress — so pretty!

I definitely wore black to the last wedding I attended because it was a night wedding and I couldn’t seem to find another dress haha.

I’m going to my friend’s wedding in a week and a half–my natural style tends to be pretty dramatic and colorful, but I’ll probably tone it down a little and go for just a nice, simple dress for the wedding, and probably something a little fancier for the dinner. I’m her hairstylist so I’ll be pretty busy up until the ceremony time!

so glad I read this! I have a wedding in May to attend and I am torn on what to wear! I agree on the black rule but I did wear a black dress to my cousin’s wedding. But, I dressed it up with fun red heels and red jewelry! I’m thinking a navy lace dress!

I would consider wearing black to a very formal wedding in an upscale venue, but otherwise I stay clear. I’m actually on the hunt for a dress for a wedding at the beginning of April so I’m glad I read your post. Thanks for sharing the dress ideas!
