Tips On Finding The Right Foundation

Growing up I always loved playing with makeup. I remember when my mom, grandmothers or aunt’s would give me some of their old makeup to use. As I got older I learned more about what makeup suited me best. This of course took a lot of trial and error. One of the things that took some time to perfect was finding the right foundation that fit my skin type and my skin tone. So today, I am bringing you some tips on how to do just that.

Dry Skin: If you have dry skin, you want to choose a foundation that is hydrating. I recommend using one with a creamy consistency that will help moisturize your skin. If you’re looking for a great foundation to try Maybelline’s Fit Me Dewy & Smooth is perfect for dry skin. When applying your foundation using your fingers is best because it will help your skin absorb it better.

Oily Skin: Using foundations and powders that are oil-free are key for someone with oily skin. Mineral makeup is really good for oily skin as well as products that will make you your skin look matte. I have recently fell in love with Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation. When I wear this I have no issues with oil throughout the day. It is a great drug store foundation! I apply my foundation with a beauty blender or a brush.

Combination: Determining if you are more oily or dry is best before determining what type of foundation you need. Cream to powder foundations work best for combination skin. Some great foundations to use are:

  1. Hi Mistle! Good blog. I have oily/combination skin and I love love love Makeup Forever Hd. It can be used for all skin types though which is the nice thing and its not cakey (I hate cake face). If you’ve never tried it you should give it a try and let me know what you think!

    • I’ve been wanting to try the Makeup Forever HD foundation. I heard its amazing. I typically use MAC’s Studio Fluid Fix but recently started loving the Fit Me foundation. I hate cake face too! I will let you know if I try it. 🙂

Great post! I’m 35 and NEVER learned how to pick a foundation! I guess I’m a combination, but mostly oily. I actually need a new foundation, so this is just what I was looking for.
I’m the type that always just look out for sales, and buy the cheapest, if the colour seems right ;-).

    • I’m so glad this helped! Finding a foundation that fits you best can take awhile. I know it’s taken me awhile to find what works best for me. Once you find the perfect products it’s so much easier. Think You for commenting!

I had such a hard time trying to figure my skin type that I would always buy the wrong foundations. This post is great! Now if I can just get a color matching genie to come and choose the perfect shade for me lol

    • I remember before I actually went to get shade tested, I had to play around with different shades. I went to MAC to see what shade would best fit me but now when I go to Ultra, etc it’s fairly easy for me to find the color I need. If you’re not sure about the perfect shade ask them to help you. Thank You so much for commenting.

Foundation and I have a love hate relationship. I find one I like but after a while it seems to lose its appeal. Ugh. I go to Ulta all the time asking for help. I’m taking this list with me next time.

    • I agree. Foundation is tricky! I find that as I get older my skin changes, so I try out different powders & foundations as needed. I used to use MAC’s studio fix powder & foundation in one but I find that it doesn’t give me the coverage I want anymore.

For years I was using the wrong foundation (Clinique) and then I finally went to MAC and got the right foundation color. A girl can feel totally different with the right foundation. Thanks for the drugstore foundations! I need to try some of these
