Can I just say I wish I had more time to read? I used to read all the time when I was younger but have slacked off over the years. So I am trying to get back into reading again. I recently joined a book club which is really great because it gives me a reason to add to my book collection. Now on to my list.
My darling Cecilia, if you’re reading this, then I’ve died…
Synopsis from Goodreads: Imagine that your husband wrote you a letter, to be opened after his death. Imagine, too, that the letter contains his deepest, darkest secret—something with the potential to destroy not just the life you built together, but the lives of others as well. Imagine, then, that you stumble across that letter while your husband is still very much alive. . . .
Cecilia Fitzpatrick has achieved it all—she’s an incredibly successful businesswoman, a pillar of her small community, and a devoted wife and mother. Her life is as orderly and spotless as her home. But that letter is about to change everything, and not just for her: Rachel and Tess barely know Cecilia—or each other—but they too are about to feel the earth-shattering repercussions of her husband’s secret.
Acclaimed author Liane Moriarty has written a gripping, thought-provoking novel about how well it is really possible to know our spouses—and, ultimately, ourselves.
Why it made my list: I had heard really good things about this book and the author. So when I joined the book club, this was the first book that was on the list. Perfect right? Now I am only a few chapters in and I will say it is hard to get into the book at first. After I started reading more, it really is interesting. I will let you know how I feel about it after I finish reading it.
Synopsis from Goodreads: Big Little Lies follows three women, each at a crossroads:
Madeline is a force to be reckoned with. She’s funny and biting, passionate, she remembers everything and forgives no one. Her ex-husband and his yogi new wife have moved into her beloved beachside community, and their daughter is in the same kindergarten class as Madeline’s youngest (how is this possible?). And to top it all off, Madeline’s teenage daughter seems to be choosing Madeline’s ex-husband over her. (How. Is. This. Possible?).
Celeste is the kind of beautiful woman who makes the world stop and stare. While she may seem a bit flustered at times, who wouldn’t be, with those rambunctious twin boys? Now that the boys are starting school, Celeste and her husband look set to become the king and queen of the school parent body. But royalty often comes at a price, and Celeste is grappling with how much more she is willing to pay.
New to town, single mom Jane is so young that another mother mistakes her for the nanny. Jane is sad beyond her years and harbors secret doubts about her son. But why? While Madeline and Celeste soon take Jane under their wing, none of them realizes how the arrival of Jane and her inscrutable little boy will affect them all.
Big Little Lies is a brilliant take on ex-husbands and second wives, mothers and daughters, schoolyard scandal, and the dangerous little lies we tell ourselves just to survive.
Why it made my list: This is the next book to read for the book club, so of course it’s on my list. It was also recommended to me by several friends. I really think this one is going to be good!
Synopsis from Goodreads: Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”
Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!
In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.
Why it made my list: Mindy Kaling is extremely funny and I have heard really good reviews on this book. I figured why not read it.
Synopsis from Goodreads: Libby Day was just seven years old when her evidence put her fifteen-year-old brother behind bars. Since then, she has been drifting. But when she is contacted by a group who are convinced of Ben’s innocence, Libby starts to ask questions she never dared to before. Was the voice she heard her brother’s? Ben was a misfit in their small town, but was he capable of murder? Are there secrets to uncover at the family farm or is Libby deluding herself because she wants her brother back? She begins to realise that everyone in her family had something to hide that day… especially Ben. Now, twenty-four years later, the truth is going to be even harder to find. Who did massacre the Day family?’
Why it made my list: Can I just say Gone Girl? After reading that book by Gillian Flynn, I had to get this one. Her books keep you guessing!
Now there are probably a lot more books that I will add to my list over time. I can’t wait to let you know my reviews on these once I get them read and I’ll keep you updated on the book club.
Do you have any books you are currently reading or recommend?
I’m intrigued by The Husband’s Secret, but I’m afraid it would make me paranoid about my own marriage. I do believe it is on my To Be Read list regardless.
To me it was not easy to get into at first but once I started reading I changed my mind. I’m only on chapter 8 though. So I will see how it ends.
I’m so curious about Dark Reads. I’m going to have to put in on my To be Read List. Love the list!
Let me know what you think are good reads to add to my list. I think Dark Places will be a good book.

Each and every one of these books are going on my reading list! I love finding new books to read. I must say I’m guilty of judging a book by its cover. I love seeing unique book covers.
Leslie, I love finding new books too. I haven’t read as much as I used to but I’m trying to now. Let me know what you think if you read any of these or have any good recommendations.
